New Source for Substitutes

Temporary employment agencies may be the new source for hiring substitute teachers. New legislation is aimed at helping school districts deal with the growing shortage.

Opponents of the bill argue the legislation would hurt the quality of educators in public schools. Supporters say the bill would help districts save money and give them another option in looking for substitutes.

The Republican-controlled House voted 56-49 along party lines to approve the bill. The Senate must consider the vote before the Legislature adjourns for the year or the bill will be reintroduced next year.

It requires subs hired through private companies to meet necessary qualification standards.
