Lansing Police and Fire Departments bear the brunt in Mayor Tony Benavides' final budget balancing proposal. Council members have until Monday to tweak the list.

Benavides proposed cutting 40.3 city positions, 16 from the Police Department and 15 from the Fire Department. The Police positions would include a mix of cuts and vacancies, the Fire Department positions would come from leaving vacant slots open. The remainder of the cuts and vacancies would come from other city departments and would save the city $2.5 million.

Council members met Thursday for another budget review session. Shortly after it started, a proposal came to axe $62,000 from the council budget. The motion passed and the money is now tagged for a police officer position.
