E.Lansing Approves Budget

Try balancing a 55-million dollar bank account. That was the task facing the city of East Lansing as they approved their 2006 budget.

For East Lansing there are no layoffs and no property tax increases -- however -- East Lansing's government will be smaller next year.

The council's approved keeping about seven vacant positions vacant for the short term.

That trims about $350,000 from the city's 2006 bottom line.

Thier vote means $140,000 in program cuts -- including funding to organizations like the crisis counseling center -- The Listening Ear.
