In a surprise move Gov. John Engler has endorsed more gambling in Michigan.

Gov. Engler is backing off-track horse race betting and card rooms at race tracks as a move to save race tracks around the state.

Horse racing has lost revenue to casinos. The state's seven race tracks employee nearly 40,000 people and the overall industry pumps a billion dollars into the state's economy.

The expansion of gambling at race tracks requires legislative approval and strong opposition is expected.
