NAPOLEON TOWNSHIP, JACKSON CO. - A 37-year-old man has died in the hospital after being rescued from a burning car in Jackson County Tuesday afternoon. The crash happened along Hoyer Road in Napoleon Township shortly before 5 o'clock. Police dispatchers received calls that a car matching the crash vehicle's description was driving recklessly and at a high rate of speed. The car left the road and struck a tree, then caught fire.
A statement form the Napoleon Township Police says that Sgt. Duaine Pittman of the Napoleon Twp. Police Dept. along with Deputies Tony McNeil and Crystal McCormick of the Jackson County Sheriff's Dept. were able, after approximately 3 minutes, to pull the belted driver to a safe area away from the car as the flames spread through the interior of the vehicle.
Shawn Michael Berkeypile was taken to University of Michigan Hospital, but he succumbed to his injures later that night.
Napoleon Township police continue to investigate the crash.
