The Kids Count In Michigan Report released on Thursday by the Michigan League shows teens are dropping out at a faster rate.
The report found that seven percent of Michigan students between the ages of 16 to 19 dropped out during the 1999-2000 school year, that number is up one percent from 10 years ago.
Lansing schools say their students are dropping out at a much higher rate in 2000-2001, closing in on 14 percent. Educators say urban communities like Lansing are a greater risk for dropouts.
They add that factors such as racial and socioeconomic status, and being a single parent all contribute. One way to change this phenomenon is to get kids interested in school earlier and illustrate how important an education is to life.
