Lawmaker Pensions

Michigan will pay $1.2 million a year for the pensions of state senators who will be gone by end of the year.

The 26 senators are leaving because of term limits on the last day of the year.

It's unlikely that pension costs for departing lawmakers will be as expensive in the future. That's because term limits no longer allow for long-serving senators.

The retirement packages include full medical benefits. And retirement pay will increase four percent a year as long as the senators or their spouses live.
