A group of churches in Lansing is putting pressure on the school district to improve literacy.

The Greater Lansing Association for Development and Empowerment, GLADE, is interested in a program called "direct instruction".

It's a program that helps literacy prior to fourth grade.

Direct instruction is highly structured and phonics-based.

The group claims it gives young children the basics they miss in lower grades.

That deficit isn't apparent in Lansing’s MEAP scores, but it is gaining support from administrators.
