A proposed requirement that public school employees reach age 60 before getting retiree health care coverage has been dropped by Republican leaders.
In a joint release put out late Friday, Gov. Rick Snyder, Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville and House Speaker Jase Bolger said they're no longer including the age limit in a bill aimed at reducing what the state owes for school employees' pension and retiree health care costs.
Senate Bill 1040 still would require most school employees to put more than 10 percent of their paychecks toward retirement costs next school year, a move teachers oppose.
But school workers can continue to retire before age 60 and get retiree health care as long as they've put in the required number of years on the job.
