State Sen. Ray Basham (D-Taylor) is expected to introduce legislation this week to ban smoking in Michigan restaurants and bars.

This is the fourth time he will be trying to pass the bill, but this time he says with more bipartisan support, he's confident it can pass.

Basham says smoking in bars and restaurants is not just a nuisance issue, but a public health crisis. He says it is time for the state government to do something about the dangers of second-hand smoke.

Rob Gifford of the Michigan Restaurant Association argues the issue is a private workplace matter and restaurants should be allowed to address it on their own. He also says the workplace is doing a good job meeting the needs of both smokers and non-smokers.
