Experts at Sparrow Hospital’s substance abuse program say substance abusers like Michigan State’s suspended football quarterback, Jeff Smoker, may not be at an advantage when it comes to youth when trying to overcome their addiction.

Doctors at the hospital call substance abuse a disease.

If substance abuse is caught at young age doctors say side effects can be curtailed. But overall, experts say fighting the sickness of substance abuse is a lifelong battle and effects people of almost all ages.

Troy Wendell, director of the substance program, says substance abuse is like most sickness and individuals can overcome it only by working to stay healthy and continue living in a healthy manner.
