Prison Guard Tower Cutbacks Coming

Michigan corrections officials soon will cut back the number of hours prison guard towers are staffed.

The Michigan Civil Service Commission this week signed off on the department's proposal to cut some guard tower shifts at 20 of the state's most violent prisons.

A corrections spokesman says shifts won't be cut until the department finishes installing new security measures, including electrified fences and motion detectors.

The Michigan Corrections Organization fought the guard tower shift cuts in court. Its leader says he doesn't think the new security measures will prevent prison violence better than a prison guard in a tower with a gun.
