Legislative Republicans are after the governor for trying to end a $500 MEAP scholarship program for elementary school children when they say former Gov. John Engler promised the money.
Gov. Granholm says while there may have been a "verbal" promise, she has been told none of the students were ever notified in writing that they were getting the money. The governor says "a specific promise was not made."
She says the state cannot afford to continue the program, and she called on Republicans who wanted to give the money to find the money to do it. She reminded them, "We have a $770 million deficit."
