We all know shoveling snow is a great workout and an exercise physiologist at Michigan State University has the research to prove it.
Chris Womack, Ph.D., says clearing your walkway is equivalent to jogging or taking a brisk walk. It's a good way for young, healthy adults to get the recommended 30 minutes of exercise.
But older adults need to be careful. Thousands of people die each winter from heart attacks brought on by shoveling snow. Womack says men older than 40 and women older than 50 should be screened by a doctor for cardiovascular disease before shoveling.
Anyone with known cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure or high cholesterol should not be shoveling snow.
