Breaking down when the Judge asked him if he understood the charge against him, Steven James Gilbert, 36, was arraigned on one count of open murder for the death of 12-year-old Samantha Detzler.
It happened in a Clinton County courtroom Thursday just hours after Detzler's body was found in the woods off of Brown Rd. in DeWitt Township. She's the Lansing girl who went missing Saturday night. Police are not saying how she was killed.
Gilbert is set to appear in court again on March 10. As requested by Clinton County Prosecuting Attorney Charles Sherman he was not given bond. According to the Michigan Department of Corrections Web site, Gilbert previously spent eight years in prison for assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder.
