By a five to two vote, the trustees of Lansing Community College (L.C.C.) approved a health care plan allowing same sex couples to utilize benefits.

While it’s estimated the plan will impact only three to six employees at L.C.C. and cost less than one percent of the school’s total budget; the plan was met by opposition.

Trustee Mark Canady claimed the same sex benefit plan lacked public discussion and the board was attempting to use “backdoor methods” to add it to the collective bargaining of the health benefits as a whole.

L.C.C. plans to utilize criteria adopted by Michigan State University and various corporations to define “what is a same sex partnership.”
