A new diagnostic lab will lead the fight against the West Nile virus and other potentially devastating diseases.

The Diagnostic Center for Population and Animal Health is under construction and will be completed in December of 2003. It's located just south of the campus of Michigan State University.

Officials say the $53 million facility will be considered the first line of defense against diseases such as Chronic Wasting Disease in deer and other agents that can be used in bioterrorism.

The building is a joint venture between the state and Michigan State University and about 150 employees are scheduled to work there.

The new facility will be one of the largest, most sophisticated and comprehensive diagnostic buildings in the nation.
