Red Cross Impact

As of Wednesday afternoon six of the 36 families displaced by the Waverly Park Apartment fire went to the Mid-Michigan Red Cross for Assistance. They doled out more the $4000 worth of food and clothing vouchers.

If all 36 families ask for help and the Red Cross responds in similar fashion, that's a bill of more than $25,000.

The Red Cross constantly relies on the help of the public to fund their assistance efforts. Mid-Michigan Executive Director John Cauley is somewhat concerned the public may not perceive an apartment fire as dire a situation when compared to the Asian tsunami disaster. But, he says, help is needed just as badly.

But, the fire has been deemed a 'non-recurrent event,' making it eligible for national Red Cross money if the local public doesn't come through.

Cauley says the last 12 months because of the tsunami and last summer's Florida hurricanes they've had a drop off in requested revenues.
