State insurance regulators say this year's latest edition of the Buyers' Guide to Home and Renters' Insurance is vital to receiving the lowest rates.
Regulators say the guide is designed to show how much rates can vary from company to company.
They say shopping around allows homeowners to pick the cheapest rates, but they add most seem to be intimidated by the process.
According to the Office of Financial and Insurance Services, homeowners insurance rates in Michigan increased by 16 percent this year. Nationally, as much as 25 percent in some states.
Regulators also say to talk to your insurance agents about the right level of deductibles and make sure your receiving the proper discounts on premiums. This can also lower rates.
