Low and middle income households may be eligible for the federal Earned Income Tax Credit. Applying for that credit could bring in up to four thousand dollars for an eligible household. But, last year in the Lansing area more than one million dollars went unclaimed.
Low income households sometimes aren't legally required to file their income taxes. But, the EITC can only be applied for WHEN taxes are filed. This is one reason why many don't take advantage of the refund.
Now, several area organizations are offering free tax help for eligible individuals. This way they can apply for the tax credit at the same time.
It's also possible to back-file for years eligible recipients may have missed.
