Items that are considered to be deductible medical expenses include co-payments, out-of-pocket payments on prescription drugs, transportation to and from doctor's appointments, and glasses and contact lenses.

And that list now includes dues for weight-loss programs, such as Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig, transportation to and from meetings and out-of-pocket payments for gastric bypass surgery. What are not deductible are over-the-counter diet pills and most diet food.

Whether or not your gym membership is deductible is decided by the IRS and your doctor. If it's decided that you could get your exercise without going to the gym, such as walking outside, then the expense will not be deductible.

If the medical expenses do not add up to at least 7.5 percent of your adjusted gross income, you will not get these deductions.
