Some hunters spend hundreds of dollars on ammunition, and gear, more if they purchase a new weapon. There is also food and lodging to factor in, plus the money for licenses that is not including in the yearly totals.
In 2001, the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildfire calculated hunters spent $2 billion in Michigan. $1.2 billion of that was from deer hunting.
Management at Gander Mountain store in Delta Township says they do 30 to 40 percent of their gun and ammunition sales in the months before deer season. They also triple their sales on those weekends just before the start.
This year, the only black mark on the ticker tape might come from ammunition sales. The war in Iraq puts a strain on production, and some brands are not readily available.
