Undoing the MEAP?

Some educators are urging a yes vote on Proposal 4 ballot plan, the so called Health Care/Tobacco settlement, because it could undermined the administration of the MEAP exam in state schools.

If the proposal is adopted state funding of the MEAP/Merit Scholarship program could be ended. Some administrators say that is good because many students and parents don't like MEAP and without the financial incentive to take the exam, many will not. They say that will be a plus but other educators argue if smarter children don't take the exam, then the schools will end up with lower overall scores and that could damage their public image.

The governor wants to keep funding for the program but a health care coalition wants the money earmarked for health care programs.

Michigan voters will decide in November which side wins.
