If you're heading out to shop during Black Friday, you're advised to hand the cashier a check or credit card to pay for your purchases. The holiday shopping season is prime time for identity thieves, and experts say if you have a debit card, use the credit function instead.
Credit car companies usually offer protection in case someone steals your number. However, your checking account could be emptied if that happens with a debit car.
Also, if you apply for an "in-store" credit car, be aware of those standing behind you in line.
And when shopping online, security experts say check to make the site is encrypted and secure. Don't enter your credit card number unless you see an "S" after the "http" in the address bar. (The "S" stands for secure.) Be sure to look for the "lock" icon in the lower right corner of your screen as well.
