After four years of not allowing students from outside the area to participate in the schools of choice program the DeWitt School Board voted 5 to 2 in favor of it.

The vote will mean about $168,000 in additional state revenue for the school to address a looming budget problem.

The money will help plug the districts estimated 2005-2006 budget shortage of at least 1.2 million.

Critics of the move say the schools of choice students will only add to fears of overcrowding in the district.
