A small plane crashed on the city's east side Monday afternoon, hitting at least two houses in a residential neighborhood and sparking fires, police said.

“The plane went down near Detroit City Airport about 2 p.m.,” Detroit police Sgt. John Claybourne said.

Two people believed to be the pilot and a passenger escaped from the plane after the crash, and they were reported to be walking around afterward, Detroit police Officer Derek Jones said. No injuries were reported on the ground, he said.

The roof of one house was completely burned off, and another house appeared to be nearly gutted by fire. The mangled remains of the aircraft rested on charred ground across the street from one of the homes.

“It wasn't immediately clear whether the plane was trying to take off or land from the airport,” Claybourne said.

A message seeking additional information was left with the Federal Aviation Administration.
