A grant from the Office of Highway Safety Planning will finance overtime hours for patrolmen looking for drunk drivers. Local and state agencies will participate. The patrols will be out in force until January 2, 2005.
Grant money will also finance three new toxicologists with the state police. Since the enactment of a law that brought the blood alcohol level to .08, tests with the state police have been swamped with extra samples. They spend significantly more time in drug testing as well. The number of samples creates a backlog for courts, and the police hope to get results to prosecuting attorneys within 30 days, thanks to the grant money.
