MSU Leads in Homeland Security Food Safety

A $1,000,000 grant on homeland security gives MSU a national food safety program, designed to stop terrorist treats like Thompson talked about in a speech on Friday.

Deputy Director Dr. Edward Mather says Thompson's warning is a concern, but they are making strides. Establishing communication between scientists, first responders, grocers, etc. is one step. Another focus: Developing fastest diagnostics to respond to contamination, and find its source. Prevention is in its infancy. MSU is developing a biosensor to scan food at ports, but Mather says it needs more research.
