The new contract includes provisions for safe lifting of patients, staffing, assigning the right staff to the right patient, and a savings plan that lets employees put away money for future health care, tax-free.
Kim Ford at the Professional Employees Council at Sparrow Hospital says the union is happy and relieved to have found a contract they call "among the strongest in the state." Sparrow representative Lorri Rishar echoes the excitement. She says the new contract's special features will help the hospital recruit new employees and retain old staff.
The vote included over 900 ballots. Ninety-two percent voted to approve. The new contract will cover about 1,800 of Sparrow 6,500 employees.
