It's a question not normally asked when you vote.

"Can I see your ID," Paula Panetta asked voters as they entered the Foster Community Center.

You can expect it from now on, as Michigan's photo ID law took effect Tuesday.

"They can either show a photo id that's government issued, most commonly a drivers licence," said Chris Swope, Lansing City Clerk. "If they don't have photo ID with them, they can sign an affidavit, simply putting down their name and address."

Close to 340,000 of Michigan's 7.8 million registered voters don't have a Michigan driver's license or state ID. A U.S. passport and military or student identification are also being accepted. Even though it hasn't been much of a problem, some still resisted.

"We had one voter that thought he didn't have to show his id, and I tried to explain to him that he had to show the ID. He finally did show us," said Panetta.

Michigan is one of three states where voters are now required to show an ID or sign an affidavit if they want to vote. It's all in hopes of curbing voter fraud. But some don't believe it's a big deal.

"East Lansing has never encountered any voter fraud," said JoAnn Hubbard, Co-Chair of East Lansing's 1st Ward. "It's probably not necessary. Students are anxious to vote, especially first time voters that have just registered."

"I'm not sure that there was really a problem that's being solved by this," said Swope. "I have not seen any evidence that we have voter fraud. I think it was a problem that didn't really need solving."

Problem or not, you'll have to prove who you say you are.

Swope added that so far, Tuesday's election is for the most part, "moving smoothly."
