The Michigan Deer Crash Coalition kicks off a statewide public education campaign to help combat car-deer crashes.

The campaign details the problem of car-deer crashes and announces the new public service campaign including radio PSA's and a new website.

In 2001, car-deer crashes resulted in 11 motorist deaths and more than 2,000 injuries. It caused an estimated $130 million in damage. On average, crashes of these types happen every eight minutes in Michigan.

The coalition says property damage caused by the accidents amounts to about $2,000 per vehicle. The organization also says motorists are most often involved in an accident when they swerve to avoid the deer.
