Republican Attorney General Mike Cox has doled out $340,000 in bonuses for about 230 of his assistants, claiming they are working longer hours and there are fewer lawyers doing all the work. The one time merit increases ranged from $170 to $1700.
Democrat Governor Granholm criticizes the move suggesting there are 55,000 other state workers who have made sacrifices, and they are not getting any bonus. In fact, some are still taking time off without pay.
Cox's office explains the merit program is actually saving the state $70,000. Had the lawyers been under the so called step pay scale which applies to other civil servants, they would have gotten a four percent raise instead of the average three percent offered this week.
