The mood was mixed as 28-year-old Matthew Macon sat in his red jumpsuit before District Judge Patrick Cherry during Tuesday's preliminary hearing.
Half the room were family members of victims looking for justice. The other half was family members supporting Macon, saying he was making better choices in his life.
"There is such a thing as due process," said Clifton Jackson, cousin of Macon. "My cousin is innocent of these crimes that's he's been charged and accused of."
The preliminary hearing will determine if Macon will stand trial in the August killings of 64-year-old Sandra Eichorn, 46-year old Karen Delgado-Yates and assaulting another woman. Several witnesses testified including Dr. Phillip Robert Croft. Croft, a Forensics Pathologist, says Delgado-Yates suffered two gaping lacerations on the back of her head, a fractured skull and several cracked ribs among other things.
The pain was too much for Gerald Lehman, son of Sandra Eichorn. He testified Tuesday morning he knew something wasn't right when he got to his mother's house.
For other family members, Tuesday proved to be a way for the healing process to begin.
"We had that opportunity today to reach out and touch each other, when some of us have been wanting to make those connections, but hadn't made them yet. This gave us that opportunity," said Carol Wood, whose mother Ruth Hallman was allegedly killed by Macon.
The preliminary hearing marks only the beginning for Macon. He could also faces charges in the deaths of four other women, all found beaten in Lansing houses.
Macon's preliminary hearing will continue Monday November 5th at 9:00 a.m.
