Updated: Wed 5:48 PM, Sep 18, 2002

A small sample of the bacteria used to make swine vaccine is missing from a Michigan State University lab.

Campus police say the samples were stolen from the Biomedical and Physical Sciences building last week sometime between Thursday night and Friday morning.

According to the University, the bacteria will not harm humans, but causes breathing problems in young pigs. Michigan State is notifying veterinarians and pork producers about the theft.

Along with the bacteria, research notebooks and computer disks were stolen.

Anyone with information about the thefts should contact the university police at 355-2221.
