Governor’s Focus on Education

The Lansing Center held Gov. Engler’s Education Summit, though it also held some controversy. Local educators voiced their doubts on a smooth transition towards federal standards implemented by President George W. Bush.

The president’s federal legislation called, "No Child Left Behind," hopes to conquer the economic education gap, improve qualifications for teachers and increase testing criteria for schools.

Michigan has adhered to much of these criteria in the past, though some states have not.

Local educators say that the federal revamping will cause short-term growing pains, in that a revamped testing system will not be comparable to past tests – making the measurement of improvement difficult.
