Four decades after a federal advisory panel's prominent report on the causes of race riots in Detroit and six other cities, researchers are planning a follow-up.
The new study will return to the cities to examine the current racial climate, jobs, housing and education.
The study is being overseen by the Institute for Advanced Journalism Studies at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University and the University of Pennsylvania Center for Africana Studies.
The cities to be studied are Detroit; Birmingham, Alabama; Cambridge, Maryland; Los Angeles; Philadelphia; Newark, New Jersey; and Tampa, Florida.
