The state ordered the removal of more than 1,000 markers representing America's war dead in Iraq from a median on Woodward Avenue in Ferndale.
Local members of Veterans for Peace over the weekend installed the white posts bearing wooden crosses, Stars of David or plaques or non-Christian soldiers.
The veterans had planned to play taps Monday night, hold a candlelight vigil and recite each soldier's name before removing the markers. But the Michigan Department of Transportation, which controls Woodward, ordered the display removed.
A vigil was held outside Ferndale City Hall instead.
