Jobless rates dropped in all 12 of Michigan's major labor markets in August, in part because temporarily laid off auto workers were called back to work after plants finished their annual retooling in July, state officials said Friday.

However, employment declined in 10 of the regions over the month as some seasonal and summer jobs ended, according to the state Department of Labor & Economic Growth.

Seasonally unadjusted unemployment rates dropped from 0.2 of a percentage point to nearly 2 percentage points, with labor market areas encompassing Flint, Detroit, Grand Rapids and Lansing seeing the largest declines.

The number of seasonally unadjusted payroll jobs in Michigan rose in August by 23,000 to total 4.33 million.
