School District Fires Second Football Coach This Season

It's usually the hard hits and tackles that bring the danger in high school football.

But the Jackson School District now has some concerns about the safety of their students off the field.

"We had reports of a coach stopping a bus, unloading the bus and having the student athletes on the side of the road doing calisthenics," says A'Lynne Robinson, district spokeswoman.

Robinson says middle-school football coach Anthony Porter was fired for those actions, which she says endangered the students.

Porter didn't want to comment on camera but tells us, "Taking the kids off the bus, in hindsight, may have been a bad decision," but maintains he did not put his student-athletes in danger.

This isn't the only time this season Jackson schools have had issues with their football coaches. Just last month, a football coach was fired from Jackson High School. In September, JV coach Ricky Hurst was fired after reports he hit a student in the locker room.

"There have been a couple instances of adults making very poor decisions when it came to students," Robinson says.

Jackson schools get their coaches through a third-party contractor, and Robinson says they're now double-checking the quality of training these coaches get.

That's why Michigan Center athletic director Greg Pscodna says his district relies solely on teachers or parents to coach.

"We have an advantage in that our students really get to know the coaches because they're staff," he says.

The remaining contracted coaches will continue working in Jackson but discussions will take place on the manner in which they're expected to coach. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
