Municipal Leaders Warn of Money Problems

A group of county officials and law enforcement officers are warning that police officers and firefighters will be laid off if county property taxes are not collected in the summer instead of the winter.

The earlier collection would go into a pool counties could draw from to replace lost revenue sharing dollars.

At a news conference Tuesday at the state Capitol, local government representatives said they've already scaled back their spending and have no where else to cut.

The House put off a vote on the bill last week when the chamber appeared far short the votes needed to pass a measure in the chamber. It's expected to be reconsidered Wednesday.

It could be a tough fight because some Republican state lawmakers consider the change a tax increase.

They argue that it prevents property owners from saving as much as they would if the collection stayed at the end of the year.
