Gameday at Spartan Stadium is one of John Aldrich's favorite days of the year.

"I love getting out here with all of my friends and occasionally seeing a good football game," said Aldrich, a tailgater at Spartan games for more than 40 years.

This season, MSU Police are looking to make the home game experience for all Spartan fans, including John, even safer. Fans can now text campus police if they see anyone getting a little out of hand. The tips are anonymous and not connected with the sender.

"If individuals see something, we want them to say something," said Florene McGlothian-Taylor from MSU Police Department.

The measure is on top of recent improvements that have caused alcohol-related crime to drop more than 25 percent in East Lansing over the last 5 years. Campus police team up with other local police departments to manage traffic, keep the stadium atmosphere safe and make sure tailgating doesn't get out of hand. More than 100 people are brought in to serve as additional non-police security and help search fans on their way into the stadium.

"We like to give a little leeway and let people enjoy the day," said Greg Ianni, a Deputy Director in MSU's Athletics Department. "It's a one-of-a-kind event and a celebration for our campus and community."

Spartan supporters WILX spoke to say that the leeway is appreciated.

"As long as everybody is under control, we don't get hassled," said Aldrich.

"[The police] have been wonderful," said Jim Campbell, who's been tailgating at MSU for decades. "They leave us alone."

"Just keep it real and don't do anything stupid and you're good to go," said Jacob Nicolas, a senior at MSU.
