BRIDGMAN, Mich. (AP) -- A 26-year-old Chicago man has been reported missing after he went swimming in high waves in Lake Michigan near Bridgman.
The Lincoln Charter Township Police Department says emergency crews responded to a report of a distressed swimmer at a private beach about 6 p.m. Friday. It says the man had been staying with two other men at a nearby home and they took a raft out on the lake and went swimming.
The Chicago man was caught in the current. A Coast Guard helicopter unsuccessfully searched the area after dark.
Earlier in the day, the National Weather Service had warned people to stay away from the lake due to high winds and strong rip currents.
