We start in Okemos, where Dr. James Brouillette at Ingham Community Medical Center, a partner of Ingham Regional, says MRSA is going around.

It usually appears as a skin infection like a boil or abscess. The skin would be swollen, red, painful and often pus-filled.

If you have MRSA, you should see a doctor right away. A doctor will likely prescribe an antibiotic.

If there is a boil or abscess, it will be drained so bacteria won't spread.

Dr. Brouillette is also treating summer allergies.

Symptoms include a clear runny nose, sneezing, and itchy eyes, throat, and ears.

To treat allergies, take an antihistamine like Zyrtec or Claritin.

Over-the-counter nasal sprays and allergy eye drops can also help.

In Albion, Dr. Miranda Makulski of Allegiance Family Medicine is treating hay fever on a daily basis.

Symptoms include: itching; sneezing; runny, stuffy nose; headache; sore throat; cough; and watery, red or swollen eyes.

Antihistamines will help reduce sneezing, runny nose and itchiness.

Decongestants will temporarily relieve a stuffy nose.

Nasal sprays and eye drops may help too.

Amy Davies, a family nurse practitioner at Allegiance Summit Woods is seeing a rise in viral gastroenteritis, or stomach flu.

Symptoms include: vomiting, diarrhea, fever, body aches, fatigue, chills and loss of appetite.

To treat it, drink plenty of fluids. Once the vomiting has stopped, start a soft, bland diet.

Tylenol and/or Motrin can help with fever or body aches.

If you think you are dehydrated or your symptoms last longer than three days without improving, see your doctor.

The best way to prevent getting the stomach flu is to wash your hands often and avoid contact with those who are infected.
