A nationwide egg recall has been expanded to 380 million eggs as the number of salmonella food poisoning cases begin to rise across the country. Federal health officials say the number of those ill nationwide will likely grow.
Jeffrey D. Armstrong, dean of Michigan State University's College of Agriculture said the system or process by which chickens are raised and eggs are produced is very safe, but the risk of foodborne illnesses is never zero.
"We have a very safe food supply, but sometimes things go wrong, Armstrong said. "Anytime there is a food recall or sicknesses, especially the elderly or young, that's a problem."
Michigan is not listed as a state at risk for the egg recall. Brands like Albertson's and Farm Fresh are named as at-risk eggs, but Armstrong says Michiganders shouldn't worry due to good tracking of where the eggs go.
"The egg system is pretty accurate on [where eggs are shipped.] Albertson's, different companies work with different suppliers and they know to a high degree of accuracy where and when those eggs came from," Armstrong said.
The recall is a lesson Armstrong says is important to agriculture students.
"We look at sustainability," Armstong said. "Carbon footprint, the health of the worker, the health of the hen, the quality and safety of the product. The animal welfare of the hen and the economic cost of the product. This egg recall is an example that we have to work harder."
No deaths have been reported as part of the salmonella outbreak.
