(WICU) The recent bitter cold made the ice on Lake Erie's Presque Isle Bay perfect for ice fishing, and the thick ice is also perfect for ice boating.
About 50 dedicated ice boaters use the Erie Yacht Club as their base of operations and many of them were skimming along the ice this weekend, aided by light winds and mild temperatures.
The boaters say the speed is a thrill. So is being outdoors in the elements. Recent mild winters have prevented them from enjoying the sport.
Ice boater Dave Heitzenrater said, "The last two years we have not had any ice at all. The two years prior to that we have had very limited ice conditions for ice boating. We got in a few weekends. So this has been a good season so far."
The ice boaters say they never go out alone. And they take safety equipment with them in case of an accident.
