"We're at the point where this has to pass or there are going to have to be larger scale cuts that the district is going to have to look at," said Lewis.

WILLIAMSTON (WILX)-- Williamston schools are hoping the third time is the charm when it comes to a four million dollar sinking fund. Voters turned it down last May and November, and this is the last shot. If it doesn't pass major cuts are on the way according to the district.

The schools are having serious problems with roofs leaking, doors rotting, and parking lots crumbling; but there's not enough money in the general fund to fix it.

"These are things that can impact the safety and efficiency of the district," said concerned parent Chris Lewis, and member of "Vote Yes, Investing in Williamston's Future."

The district is asking taxpayers for a $4 million, 10-year sinking fund. The fund would tax a home in the Williamston School District with a taxable value of $100,000 approximately $100 a year. But voters have already twice, shot it down,

"I've heard some people say Williamston is already highly taxed," said Lewis.

"It's because people haven't really known what the millage is for," said Steven Cook, Director of Finance for the district.

After doing some more education around the area, the district is putting the measure before voters for a third time.

"When you're talking a couple thousand votes, a couple hundred votes separates the difference between yes and no," said Cook.

If it doesn't pass this time it'll likely not be on the ballot next year.

"We're at the point where this has to pass or there are going to have to be larger scale cuts that the district is going to have to look at," said Lewis.

There's no word yet on where those cuts would be made if the millage doesn't pass again.

"We're truly hopeful that it will pass this time around," said Lewis.
