The two candidates vying to represent the 7th district are in a virtual dead heat. A poll from a Washington-based newspaper, The Hills, shows incumbent Mark Schauer and Tim Walberg have 41% of the vote. 13% of voters are undecided. Schauer leads among women, seniors and independents.

"We're gaining momentum. Tim Walberg is falling like a rock," says Rep. Mark Schauer, D-MI.

"We're feeling very good. Remember he's the incumbent, he has a record," says Tim Walberg.

Walberg and Schauer are wasting no time.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Sander Levin, D-MI, vouched for his colleague in Grand Ledge on Wednesday -- both men stumping for fair trade with China, both men taking jabs at Walberg.

"He is out of touch with outsourcing our jobs to China and Mexico, by privatizing social security," says Schauer.

Walberg too was busy making his rounds. He met with us at a park and ride in Chelsea and accused his opponent's big spending of killing jobs in Mid-Michigan.

"Those aren't Chinese jobs," says Walberg. "They're not South Carolina jobs or Indiana jobs. They're gone, and that's of concern to us because Mark Schauer is outsourcing jobs in this country by putting on an economy that does not produce jobs."

With less than one month to go and a large number of undecided voters, both Schauer and Walberg want to make their message clear.

"We have to fight for fair trade, so that our manufacturers have a chance here," Schauer says. "We need to make sure kids get the education they need, young people can go to college."

"People need to continue to fix on the issues of the economy -- jobs and spending -- and if they continue to do that, they'll support me," says Walberg.

Both trying to tip the race in their favor, as we inch our way to November.
