"We're calling to urge you to support Virg Bernero for governor," said a campaign volunteer working the phones Tuesday.

10 a.m. to 9 p.m. , volunteers at Bernero's campaign headquarters are targeting absentee and undecided voters. And when they get someone on the line who's on their side, they ask them to join the effort.

"Contacting that one person can have a ripple effect of 10, 20, 30 people," said volunteer Michael Berkowitz.

But even that many might not be enough. The latest Rasmussen poll has Snyder with 54 percent of the vote, Bernero with 34, and just eight percent on the fence.

"Unless something dramatic happens I can't see a path where Virg is going to be able to overtake Snyder," said pollster Bernie Poll.

But at the Virg Bernero for Governor headquarters, volunteers are far from giving up.

"I think that anything is possible," said Berkowitz.

Political analyst Bernie Porn says stranger things have happened. In 1990, Senator John Engler overtook the incumbent Governor Jim Blanchard in one of Michigan's closest races ever.

"There was a surge of 10 to 12 points in just the last few days," Porn said. "It was significant and the movement occurred very quickly."

We caught up with Bernero Monday about the race.

"I ask people, please, please go look at my opponent's so-called plan, and compare it with my real plan, and when they do they'll be coming over to our side," he said.

Whether he has a chance or not, Porn says it's important Bernero stay competitive to keep other democrats in the game.

"If he gets up to 60 percent or more that's when you see coattails," he said.
