The Board of Education is not taking a position on a bill that would require a minimum of 30 minutes added onto each day for districts that don't add days to the end of the school year.
Should districts make up excess snow days by adding a few minutes to the end of each day or by adding days to the end of the year? The State Board of Education voted unanimously to recommend full makeup days, saying it's better for students that way. Districts around the state have had more than their allotted six snow days, in many cases because rural roads were impassable for several days following heavy snowfall. Current state law allows "make-up minutes" but doesn't set guidelines. A bill in the state house would force districts to add a minimum of 30-minutes per day if they don't want to extend the school year.
