CHARLOTTE -- A suspect has been arraigned in the double murder of a Delta Township couple this past Sep. 22.

He is identified as 38-year-old Christopher Allen Perrien of Sand Lake, charged with four counts -- two of felony murder, two of felony firearm possession.

Perrien, who has an extensive non-violent criminal history (mostly financial fraud) was arraigned Thursday at the Eaton County Courthouse.

Michael Greene, a retired Michigan State Police detective and his wife Terri, an employee at the Department of Environmental Quality, were found dead in their Delta Township home.

Officials declined to say whether or not Perrien knew Michael Greene, nor have they released details of how the couple was killed.

Perrien was on a court-ordered work release from the Eaton County Jail when the murders occurred. But an investigation afterwards showed Perrien didn't have a job, according to Sheriff Michael Raines.

State Sen. Rick Jones, R-Grand Ledge, told News 10 on Thursday he plans to revamp the work release program.

"I want to mandate that every work-release inmate that goes out of the jail has a tether on with GPS," Jones said. "That'll deter any kind of crime, but certainly this type of crime."

He's also calling, in light of Perrien's alleged ability to slip through the cracks, for closer monitoring of a work releaser's employment.

In Eaton County, the sheriff is taking preemptive action, requiring all work-release inmates to wear a GPS ankle tether, paid for by the inmate. He also proactively revoked the work release of several inmates and will now require work releasers to provide an original pay stub each period to jail staff.

Perrien will be back in court Jan. 5 for his preliminary examination. Bond has been denied, and he'll be issued a public defender.
